10 More Movies to Watch if You Love Halloween: Halloween is a season that’s grown on me over the years. Christmas remains my favorite, but there is something undeniably fun and spooky about the month of October. The pumpkins and foggy nights, horror films, and books. Horror is my second favorite genre after romance, so I thought it would be fun to find 10 MORE movies to watch during October for lovers of both genres! You can find my initial Halloween list right here.
SPONTANEOUS (2020)
When students in their high school begin inexplicably exploding (literally), seniors Mara and Dylan struggle to survive in a world where each moment may be their last. Spontaneous is a bloody, fresh take on teen horror, not to mention morbidly funny.
burying the ex (2014)
Before horror enthusiast Max can break things off with his girlfriend Evelyn she dies in a bus accident. In time, Max meets another woman only to have Evelyn resurface as a zombie ready to resume their relationship. Who knew some women took “forever and always” literally?
I MARRIED A WITCH (1942)
Rocksford, New England, 1672. Puritan witch hunter Jonathan Wooley is cursed after burning a witch at the stake: his descendants will never find happiness in their marriages. At present, politician Wallace Wooley, who is running for state governor, is about to marry his sponsor’s daughter. This is a cozy, magical movie with a luminous performance by Veronica Lake.
corpse bride (2005)
Set in a 19th-century European village, this stop-motion animation feature follows the story of Victor, a young man whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious corpse bride, while his real bride Victoria waits bereft in the land of the living. The songs may not be overly memorable, but this is an underrated, animated gem.
edward scissorhands (1990)
The solitary life of an artificial man – who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands – is upended when a suburban family takes him in. This is Tim Burton at his best. Quirky characters, amazing set design and a gorgeous score by Danny Elfman.
life after BETH (2014)
Zach is devastated by the unexpected death of his girlfriend, Beth. When she mysteriously returns, he gets a second chance at love. Soon his whole world turns upside down…
my boyfriend’s back (1993)
Missy McCloud is the most beautiful girl in school and Johnny Dingle has been in love with her for years. One night, Johnny is killed trying to win her over, and soon he comes back from the dead, and wins Missy’s heart. This movie is silly as hell, but it’s also a hilariously deadpan satire of the genre.
shaun of the dead (2004)
Shaun lives a supremely uneventful life, which revolves around his girlfriend, his mother, and, above all, his local pub. This gentle routine is threatened when the dead return to life and make strenuous attempts to snack on ordinary Londoners. Don’t let anyone in the horror genre make you believe otherwise – SOTD is 100% a rom com!
lisa frankenstein (2024)
In 1989, a misunderstood teenager has a high school crush â who just happens to be a handsome corpse! After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happinessâŠand a few missing body parts along the way. Another underrated gem, Lisa Frankenstein piles on the 80s nostalgia and wonderfully blends horror, humor, and romance.
HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017)
Caught in a bizarre and terrifying time warp, college student Tree finds herself repeatedly reliving the day of her murder, ultimately realizing that she must identify the killer and the reason for her death before her chances of survival run out. A Groundhog Day for horror lovers with a sweet romance to balance out the gore.
