'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy' (2025)

R | February 13, 2025 | 124 mins

She’s starting a new chapter. Just as she is.

Four years after the passing of her husband, Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones is learning to navigate life as a single mother to her two children, Billy and Mabel. With the support of friends and family, she reenters the workforce and cautiously steps back into the dating world. Along the way, she finds herself drawn to two very different men: Roxster McDuff, a charming younger suitor, and Scott, her son’s thoughtful science teacher, who provides a surprising sense of comfort and connection. Bridget confronts the emotional complexities of grief, love, and rediscovering herself as she juggles the demands of parenting, work, and new romances.

Bridget: And even though there might be 600,000 words in the human language, the world still struggles to find the right ones when someone you love is gone.

Bridget: Am rejoining ranks of London’s employed and meaningfully contributing to society. Can walk with head held high and be role model for Billy and Mabel, saving them from otherwise certain future as alcoholic wards of the state.

Miranda: Bridget, sexting a man that you just met in a park is nothing like Jane Austen’s day. If you don’t shag him, I will.

Bridget: Dearest darling Mark, it’s your birthday on Sunday, and… I’m just no good at doing this on my own. I’m sorry I’m such a bad mother, I’m sorry I got caught up with a callow toy boy, I’m sorry I’m late for school and that Billy’s withdrawn. They’re growing up without you. How is Billy going to understand how to be a man without his father? How is Mabel going to live her life having never really known you at all? Please forgive me for being upset about anything which isn’t about not having you. Please help me find a way to do this without feeling like I’m ruining the most important part of my life… The only part that still has you in it.

Bridget: ‘Don’t be a… twin’? That says ‘Don’t be a twin?’
Dr. Rawlings: ‘Twat’. Sorry, it’s doctor’s handwriting. That’s an ‘A’ in the middle there.

Bridget: Starting today: Will not set things on fire, will responsibly reset passwords not to include the word ‘fuckwit’, and will not be frightened of the school mums, in particular, Perfect Nicolette… with her perfect twins.

  • Blue cocktails and sliced oranges at the first meeting of best friends strongly resemble ‘blue soup’ and marmalade from the disastrous meal in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001).
  • The ‘too see-through’ top Bridget is wearing while choosing an outfit for her first date with Roxster is the same top she wore to the office early on in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) to attract Daniel.
  • Towards the end of the film, Bridget’s friends discuss how long they’ve been doing this and agree on 30 years. It’s been 30 years since the first book was published.
  • Roxster emerging from the pool and removing his wet shirt is a deliberate nod to Colin Firth’s iconic scene as Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (1995). It’s a layered meta joke referencing Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), where Firth plays Mark Darcy—a character inspired initially by his portrayal of Mr. Darcy. His casting was intentionally self-referential, blurring the lines between actor, character, and adaptation.
  • In the UK, it had the biggest opening weekend for a romantic comedy at the box office, a record previously held by Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004). It also achieved the highest-ever opening for a Working Title film.
  • This is the only entry in the Bridget Jones’ franchise directed by a man.
  • The credits at the movie’s end include snapshots and clips from the previous movies.
  • Isla Fisher only appears in one scene. The character is more present in the book, but in the movie, the material is given to other, already established characters. It’s said she did the cameo as a favor to the director.
