Cinematic eras are broad time periods in film history, each shaped by its own styles, storytelling trends, technology, and industry norms. They often reflect the cultural mood of the time, artistic movements, and changes in how movies are made and watched.

While romantic comedies don’t have officially recognized eras, the genre has definitely evolved over the years. So if you’re looking for a specific type of rom-com, here are the five eras I’ve decided on and the years in which the films fit.

Silent (1894-1929)
Classic (1930s-1950s)
New Hollywood (1960s-mid 1980s)
Golden Age (of Rom Coms) (Late 1980s-2010)
Modern (2011-Present)
