Thursday Movie Picks: Holiday Party: Wandering through the Shelves hosts a weekly movie challenge in which you choose 3-5 movies based on that Thursday’s theme and explain why you chose those movies. Today’s theme is Holiday Party, so here are my choices!
DIE HARD (1988)
Visiting his estranged wife in Los Angeles, NYPD officer John McClane finds himself in the middle of a terrorist takeover inside Nakatomi Plaza. The entire siege takes place during what was meant to be a company holiday party, so it works for this prompt. And Die Hard IS a Christmas movie. I don’t even know why this is still a debate!
CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS (2004)
After their only daughter joined the Peace Corps, Luther and Nora Krank decided to skip Christmas and take a cruise instead. But when their daughter surprises them by coming home with a new fiance, the couple must scramble to assemble their famous Christmas Eve party before she arrives home. I enjoyed the book a lot (Skipping Christmas by John Grisham), but there are very few likable characters in this adaptation. Still, it’s a festive movie, and if you get bored, give it a watch.
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
After a life full of disappointments and sacrifices, George Bailey finally reaches his breaking point and considers throwing his life away on Christmas Eve. The movie culminates in a Christmas party where the town of Bedford Falls comes together to help George. It’s such a moving moment that is bound to bring a tear or two to your eye.

December 24, 2021Nice picks! I never did see Christmas with the Kranks, but I worked at a movie theater when it was out and I rememeber it being pretty popular.
