Thursday Movie Picks: New to the City

New to the City

Wandering through the Shelves hosts a weekly movie challenge in which you choose 3-5 movies based on that Thursday’s theme and explain why you chose those movies.

Today’s theme is New to the City, so here are my choices!

New in Town (2009)

I mean, it’s right there in the name, right? Although this is New in Town, rather than city but… whatever… technicalities. Renee Zellweger plays a corporate executive who travels to Minnesota from Florida to oversee the possible closing of a manufacturing plant. It’s a shock in terms of weather and culture, and she has a lot of trouble adjusting… but butting heads with Harry Connick Jr. provides enough heat to keep her warm.

Coming to America (1988)

Prince Akeem of Zamunda is thisclose to being pushed into an arranged marriage, but Akeem wants to marry for love, not for convenience or some kind of agenda. So he travels to Queens, New York, under the guise of having one last adventure before settling down, when in fact he’s looking for his soulmate. The pampered, wealthy prince has to adjust to life in New York, which creates plenty of hilarity for Akeem and his servant, Semmi.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

New to the city? How about an entire world? A tornado whisks Dorothy away from her little farm in Kansas to Oz, where she meets a good witch, a bad witch, a scarecrow, and… well, you know. She has to make her way to the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City if she ever wants to make it home to Kansas, but it doesn’t help that she’s got the Wicked Witch of the West on her heels to get a pair of ruby slippers off of Dorothy’s heels.
