‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ (1985) Review

04/08/2019

St. Elmo’s Fire Synopsis: A group of friends, just out of college, struggle with adulthood. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and watched St. Elmo’s Fire, one of my favorite movies from the Brat Pack era of the ’80s. Released in 1985, just five months after The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire stars quite a few of the same actors, but instead of playing teenagers learning life lessons in Saturday school, they’re playing college graduates learning life lessons as adults, and I use that term very loosely. In St. Elmo’s Fire, We’re introduced to six friends. Kirby Keager…

While Christmas shopping for their significant others, Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) share a chance encounter over a pair of black cashmere gloves. He is instantly smitten, but Sara believes in destiny, serendipity if you will, and after one magical night, they leave it up to fate as to whether or not they truly belong together. A few years later, both are engaged to be married to other people, but…

‘Second Act’ (2018) Review

11/14/2018

Second Act Synopsis: A big box store worker reinvents her life and her life-story and shows Madison Avenue what street smarts can do. Second Act is being touted as Jennifer Lopez’s “return to romantic comedy,” her last venture in the rom-com genre having been the mediocre 2010 film, The Back-Up Plan. And while I can understand why the studio wants to market Second Act as a rom-com, it’s more than a little misleading. Yes, Second Act is a comedy, but the romance it’s touting is maybe a total of twenty-five minutes of the movie from start to finish. Essentially Second…
