‘The Holiday Calendar’ (2018) Review

12/11/2018

The Holiday Calendar Synopsis: A talented photographer stuck in a dead-end job inherits an antique Advent calendar that may be predicting the future – and pointing her toward love. We’re all pretty aware that Hallmark wears the Christmas rom-com crown, but after the rom-com successes of Set It Up and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, it seems like Netflix is now attempting to corner the market on fluffy Christmas romances. I went into The Holiday Calendar with low expectations, simply because I’m not that big a fan of Hallmark’s plethora of Christmas rom-coms, and let’s be honest, the…

‘Juliet, Naked’ (2018) Review

12/02/2018

Juliet, Naked Synopsis: Annie is stuck in a long-term relationship with Duncan – an obsessive fan of obscure rocker Tucker Crowe. When the acoustic demo of Tucker’s hit record from 25 years ago surfaces, its discovery leads to a life-changing encounter with the elusive rocker himself. In Juliet, Naked, Annie (Rose Byrne) is the unfulfilled and long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), a professor who spends most of his free time running a website and shrine to Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke), an indie rock star who disappeared from the public eye in the ’90s and has stoked years of fan…

‘Playing It Cool’ (2014) Review

11/20/2018

Playing it Cool is a rom-com designed to subvert the rom-com genre, but ultimately comes across as gimmicky and a bit blah. The cast is pretty great, with Topher Grace a bright spot and Aubrey Plaza playing Aubrey Plaza, aka April Ludgate. Her character throwing bowling balls at Chris Evans is a highlight. Chris Evans’s character, who we only know as “me,” is likable, if a bit self-absorbed. He projects himself in every romantic story his grandpa and circle of friends tell him. Michelle Monaghan is a witty ‘cool’ girl who doesn’t seem to have much of an issue cheating…

Serendipity Synopsis: A couple search for each other years after the night they first met, fell in love, and separated, convinced that one day they’d end up together. While Christmas shopping for their significant others, Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) share a chance encounter over a pair of black cashmere gloves. He is instantly smitten, but Sara believes in destiny, serendipity if you will, and after one magical night, they leave it up to fate as to whether or not they truly belong together.
