❤️ Black History Month is all about celebrating Bl ❤️ Black History Month is all about celebrating Black creativity, joy, and storytelling, and I believe rom-coms absolutely belong in that conversation. The films listed here span decades, and feature memorable characters that are funny, complicated, and deeply human. Whether they’re soulful, messy, glamorous, or quietly tender, each of these movies is well worth revisiting, or even discovering for the first time this month!

🍝 Grumpier Old Men (1995): Just as John Gustafson 🍝 Grumpier Old Men (1995): Just as John Gustafson and Max Goldman resolve to save their beloved bait shop from turning into an Italian restaurant, the establishment’s new female owner catches Max’s attention and arouses his libido.

Review Excerpt: It’s truly the cast that makes Grumpier Old Men worth watching. There are times when the plot meanders a bit, and some of the jokes feel repetitive, but it’s still a pleasant comedy, even if it plays it safe, relying on nostalgia rather than offering anything fresh. While it’s not as sharp or heartfelt as the original, it’s still kept afloat by silver-screen legends and the affection most of us feel for them. Grumpier Old Men is a warm and cozy watch, but ultimately a bit forgettable once it’s over.

Review Excerpt: Overall, I enjoyed Pillow Talk. It was a pleasant movie to watch on a very cold Friday afternoon. It’s stylish and breezy, and has some truly funny moments that still land in 2026. Rock Hudson and Doris Day have great chemistry, which carries much of the movie’s charm. It’s an enjoyable pick for fans of romantic comedies, especially classics, as long as you go in knowing it doesn’t fully escape the limitations of its era.

🔪 Send Help (2026): An employee and her insufferab 🔪 Send Help (2026): An employee and her insufferable boss become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. Here, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, will they make it out alive?

Review: Survival movies are very hit or miss with me, especially survival movies that take place on an island. I think it’s difficult to come up with anything original anymore, but with the right director, anything can happen. So, yes, Sam Raimi was the perfect choice for Send Help.

This is a sharp survival thriller that expertly balances tension and violence, while still leaning into morbid humor and moments of genuine connection and humanity. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien are the perfect pair. While O’Brien nails the smug, entitled nature of Bradley, there are moments when you feel for what his character is going through.

As for Linda, well… McAdams is just remarkable in this role. She’s relatable, sympathetic and easy to root for… and yet at the same time, she carries an unpredictable dark side that, throughout the movie, you can see growing stronger in her eyes and smile. Her (perhaps justified?) rage and loss of self build to a rather inevitable bloody climax. It’s difficult not to feel conflicted about both Linda and Bradley, which is why I think the movie works so well. Neither are one dimensional characters. Both have pasts, pain and desperation. Both make questionable choices. So who do you really root for to survive at the end of the day?

What really elevates Send Help is its control of tone and pacing. This movie is relentlessly suspenseful in the best way, and every small decision Linda and Bradley make feels life-or-death. It’s a simple premise, so you’re not going to find a sprawling narrative here. And it’s not needed. Send Help thrives on restraint and atmosphere. There’s no spectacle. Just a gripping, smart, character-driven movie that will definitely have audiences debating the ending. I loved it.

🎰 Think Like A Man Too (2014): All the couples are 🎰 Think Like A Man Too (2014): All the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas, but plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.

Review Excerpt: I really enjoyed Think Like A Man, but had trouble getting into this sequel. It definitely had some laughs, and I was happy to see the cast return, but this movie was focused more on the guys’ night out vs. the ladies’ night out, rather than the actual relationships between them all. The romantic comedy aspect bookended the movie, but everything in between was a bit of a mess (like the Poison ‘video).

🚊 While You Were Sleeping (1995): A love story bui 🚊 While You Were Sleeping (1995): A love story built on a misunderstanding. A transit worker pulls commuter Peter off the tracks after he’s mugged. But while he’s in a coma, his family mistakenly thinks she’s Peter’s fiancée, and she doesn’t correct them. Things get more complicated when she falls for his brother, who’s not quite sure that she’s who she claims to be.

Review Excerpt: Jack and Lucy’s chemistry is really what makes While You Were Sleeping work. There aren’t many rom-com tropes here. They’re not bitter enemies fighting the attraction. They’re not forced together in contrived situations. Their interactions are natural despite the unusual circumstances, and even once you realize they’ve fallen in love over the course of what is essentially a week, you still believe it. What more could you want from a rom-com?

🍳 Runaway Bride (1999): A reporter is assigned to 🍳 Runaway Bride (1999): A reporter is assigned to write a story about a woman who has left a string of fiances at the altar.

Review Excerpt: Runaway Bride is extremely predictable but also romantic and fun, and it’s worth a watch just for the video montage of Maggie leaving her first three fiances at the altar. Ideally, she would have realized marriage is not really a prize and not a goal that she needed to strive for, but rom-coms being rom-coms, Maggie and Ike needed to end up together so she could overcome her “fear” of walking down the aisle to the perfect – and I use that word lightly – man.

She discovers that she must let go of her past to move forward, and comes up with a lovely, artistic way to help herself and others who have suffered heartbreak.

Review Excerpt: Ultimately, The Broken Hearts Gallery is a rom-com that understands exactly what it is and embraces it without shame. The jokes land consistently, often in small, character-driven moments, and the romance is genuine, without being overly sentimental. This was the first romantic comedy I’ve watched in a long time that really drew me in and had me smiling from ear to ear from beginning to end. Definitely a must-watch for any lover of the genre.

🦴 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026): Dr. Kels 🦴 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026): Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can’t escape.

Review Excerpt: The Bone Temple is the rare sequel that understands exactly why the former movies worked, and then dares to push even farther. I’ve seen some complaints that The Bone Temple doesn’t focus enough on the raging virus that decimated society, but in my opinion, it doesn’t need to. Writer Alex Garland still centers the story on survival, but it’s survival of a different kind of terror. The theme of clinging to hope long after it should have died is powerful, and in some ways, The Bone Temple is more unsettling than its predecessors because of its focus on moral rot and spiritual corruption.
