John: How would you like to make a very poor financial decision?

Writer/director Celine Song’s name is listed as the playwright for John’s play on a poster outside the theater, because the play is actually a real one she wrote back in 2016.
The leg-lengthening surgery discussed in this movie is real, although far less common than procedures such as rhinoplasty or breast augmentation. The cost of $200,000 stated in the film is also generally correct.
John Magaro, who voices the character Mark P. (never seen on screen), played a key character, Arthur, husband of Nora, in Past Lives, also written and directed by Celine Song.
While Lucy and Harry’s apartments were filmed on-location, John’s apartment was built in-studio. Director Celine Song shared photographs of a place where her husband, Justin Kuritzkes, formerly lived, as a reference point for the dilapidated apartment.
First thoughts for the film began around 10 years ago, when writer/director Celine Song worked for a professional matchmaking service for about six months.
The film was shot during peak wedding season, which restricted location options. Rather than being able to film the wedding sequence in one venue, production was split across four locations.
The makeup desk where Lucy sits at the start of the film once belonged to Norman Rockwell, according to set decorator Amy Silver.
At the end of the credits, there is a scene of people getting married, and the cave people are seen happily walking out of the room together.
