Henry: It’s gonna be alright, Luce.
Lucy: Don’t call me Luce. I barely know you.
Marlin: Sweetie, you’re sorta dating him.
Henry: Sorry I’m not better looking.

Henry: Appreciate your time. Not everybody would have stopped like you. You’re real sweet.
Lucy: Oh, yeah. Thank you.
Henry: Okay.
Lucy: Okay.
[Henry pretends to get electrocuted while jump-starting his car]Henry: Hah! I can’t believe you fell for that!
Lucy: Well… my grandfather died while trying to jump-start a car…
Henry: Oh… I’m so sorry. I was just joking around.
Lucy: I can’t believe you fell for THAT!

Lucy: Nothing beats a first kiss.

Lucy: I wonder what’s the matter with him.
Old Hawaiian Man: Looks like a stupid asshole to me.

Dr. Keats: All I know about walruses is that out of all mammals they have the second largest penis. I have the first.
Henry: That’s my joke.

Lucy: I don’t know who you are, Henry… but I dream about you almost every night. Why?
Henry: What would you say if I told you that notebook you read every day used to have a lot of stuff about me in it?
Lucy: I would say that that makes a lot of sense.
Henry: You erased me from your memories because you thought you were holding me back from having a full and happy life. But you made a mistake. Being with you is the only way I could have a full and happy life. You’re the girl of my dreams… and apparently, I’m the man of yours.
Lucy: Henry. It’s nice to meet you.
Henry: Lucy, it’s nice to meet you too.

  • In an early scene, a dentist and a woman in the dentist’s chair talk. The woman playing the dentist is Jackie Sandler, Adam’s wife, and the woman in the chair is Linda Segal, Director Peter Segal’s wife, who is a dentist in real life.
  • The movie is dedicated to Adam Sandler’s father, Stan Sandler, who died while the movie was in production.
  • The diner where Lucy has breakfast every morning was originally a house remodelled for the movie. It is located on a macadamia nut farm on the eastern side of Oahu. The same house was used in Tears of the Sun (2003), and scenes from Jurassic Park (1993) were filmed in the open fields nearby.
  • The clinic that Lucy visits is called the “Callahan Institute” and Dr. Keats (Dan Aykroyd) states that it is “funded out of Sandusky, Ohio by T.B. Callahan, the automotive components tycoon”. In Tommy Boy (1995), Aykroyd plays a rival automotive components tycoon who is attempting to purchase Tom (T.B.) Callahan’s company.
  • Originally titled “50 First Kisses”.
  • The book Lucy reads at breakfast, “Still Life With Woodpecker – A Sort Of A Love Story” by Tom Robbins, is a love story set in Hawaii. Drew Barrymore chose that book because it ties into the film’s themes. She owned several copies of that book, even before filming.
  • The beach used in the love scene with Henry and Lucy is the same one that Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster used in From Here to Eternity (1953).
  • The yellow car Lucy drives is a 1973 Volkswagen Thing.
  • The original script was set in Seattle. After signing on, Adam Sandler changed the location to Hawai’i, citing the Islands’ natural beauty as a great setting for a romantic comedy and because few films are shot there. Setting the film in Hawai’i would also seem to support the film’s central premise, as the Islands have a temperate climate year round, making it less likely that Lucy would notice the changing of the seasons and the passage of time from her accident.
  • The Minnesota Vikings football game Marlin and Doug watch was the Vikings playing against the Detroit Lions on October 13, 2002. The Vikings beat the Lions 31-24.
  • Drew Barrymore revealed on her talk show that the original ending had Lucy telling Henry to leave because she felt her condition would hold him back in life and it wouldn’t be fair on him. He agrees to leave and some time passes. In the final scene, Henry sits down opposite Lucy in the restaurant and introduces himself.
