Thursday Movie Picks: Movies That Haven’t Aged Well

Movies That Haven't Aged Well

Wandering through the Shelves hosts a weekly movie challenge in which you choose 3-5 movies based on that Thursday’s theme and explain why you chose those movies.

Today’s theme is Movies That Haven’t Aged Well, so here are my choices!

Sixteen Candles (1984)

An Asian character named Long Duk Dong is the epitome of an Asian stereotype, complete with the sound of a gong any time he makes an appearance. The movie is also awash in date rape culture where consent is non-existent. Racist and sexist, and I had a really difficult time enjoying this movie. You can read my review here.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

I’m really starting to love Audrey Hepburn after watching her in this movie and in Roman Holiday. But her performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the film’s real highlight. The rest of it? It’s pretty good, too… I might have even called it great, but for one, it’s a fairly large stain on the film. The horribly, horribly racist portrayal of an Asian man played by Mickey Rooney is enough to tag this film as one that aged terribly, despite being considered a classic among film lovers. Even worse, Rooney continued to defend his performance years later.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

While never explicitly stated in the movie (that I remember, anyway), Baby’s age has been rumored to be around 18, although an interview with star Jennifer Grey put Baby’s age at 17. Johnny Castle’s age in the movie was 25. So yeah, I guess you could say a 25-year-old seducing a minor is pretty problematic. I still love this movie, though I can’t help it.
