The Against the Crowd Blogathon 2021 is being hosted by Dell on Movies, and you can read more about it here!

Basically, you chose two movies from Rotten Tomatoes – one to go against and one to defend. The movie you go against should have a Fresh rating of 75% or more, and the movie you defend should be Rotten at 35% or less. And, if you decide to take part, make sure you use the hashtag #AgainsttheCrowd2021 on social media! So, without further ado, here are my two choices for the Against the Crowd Blogathon 2021!

Frozen

Frozen89% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie was huge. It still is, to be honest. I don’t think Frozen is a terrible film, but when I watched it, I honestly didn’t understand the hype. I didn’t really like any of the characters and the songs were pretty mediocre, though okay, fine, Let It Go was pretty catchy the first gazillion times I heard it. And having three girls, I heard it a lot.

It seems silly to compare the two, but given they were released within three years of each other, I really wish Tangled had gotten the kind of attention that Frozen did. To me, Tangled is a far superior movie. I don’t know what it is about Frozen, but I just don’t like it, and I can’t quite grasp how it’s so popular.

Practical Magic

Practical Magic26% on Rotten Tomates. How does this movie have a 26% rotten score? This is why I hate Rotten Tomatoes! Practical Magic is not cinema, but it’s such a romantic, cozy movie. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman both shine on the screen, and you can never go wrong with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest! A tale of magic, curses, and sisterhood… oh man, is this Frozen?? (just kidding). If there is a movie that just begs to be watched around autumn, it’s Practical Magic, and it deserves much more love than those RT critics (boo on them).

What do you think?

Sara, thanks so much for joining!

As for the movies, I’m in full agreement with you on Frozen. It’s not a bad movie, just not worthy of all the hype it got. It was…okay. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen Practical Magic. It’s not because of the movie’s rep, per se. There was a period in my life when I avoided Sandra Bullock movies. I’m over that, and I’ll get around to this one at some point. Thanks, again!

Thank you for hosting this blogathon again! It’s been fun taking part. Totally agree on Frozen not deserving the hype but I will definitely say watch Practical Magic when you get a chance! It’s a comfort movie for sure.

I do like Frozen though it’s a film that is played a lot at my house because of my 2 year old nephew and 6-month old niece. Practical Magic… the critics were fucking wrong on that film. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

My daughter really liked Frozen 2 and watched it over and over… thankfully she watched it on her tablet so I wasn’t subjected to that one too much lol

Ahah I’m with you about Frozen. I saw it one years ago and though it was entertaining, I couldn’t for the life of me understand the massive success. I enjoyed Tangled a lot more than Frozen, too, plus the songs are lovelier. Sorry but I can’t stand Idina Menzel’s voice in that ubiquitous Let It Go song, ugh!

As for Practical Magic, it’s been a while since I saw it and I think I enjoyed it.

I agree about the songs on Tangled! I think they’re far superior to Frozen as well.

I’m not the best judge of Frozen since I’m not an animation fan and have never watched it front to back. I have however seen bits (probably all of it in bits) from when my nieces and nephew were watching it, which was ALOT. From what I’ve taken the time to look at I’m not intrigued and if I never hear Let It Go again it will be much too soon. I am curious how many little Elsas will be running around in about 15-20 years when all the kids who watched it on an endless loop start having kids of their own. At least Elsa is a pretty name, so it could be worse.

I thought Practical Magic was middling. I didn’t hate it nor did I love it. I’m a big fan of Sandra Bullock and both Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are goddesses, but I find Kidman totally risible. I saw it once, not too long ago actually and that was enough for me.

I do agree that Elsa is a pretty name! And one of my daughters was Elsa for Halloween a few years back, though she’s really been rotating Disney princesses every year lol.

I agree with your taken on Frozen! I thought it was very overrated, especially when Brave exists. Practical Magic I haven’t seen in years, but I remember liking it.

Brave is SO underrated! It’s one of my favorite Pixar movies.

I will hand it to you that Tangled deserved the same attention, but I do love Frozen. I try to cling to the fact that I loved it before the hype went into overdrive though, haha.
I haven’t seen Practical Magic but I always thought it was a widely-loved movie!

I think part of the reason I dislike Frozen so much was BECAUSE of the hype. I think it raised so many expectations and when I saw it, I just didn’t see what everyone else was seeing. Could also be that Let It Go was overplayed. lol

Practical Magic is a lot of fun! Definitely a comfort watch for me.

Cool picks! I agree. Frozen is fun, especially the songs, but it feels like Disney whipped it up super fast. It’s always interesting to see how far movies come along from original Rotten Tomatoes scores, but I’m invested less and less in what it shows. Practical Magic’s popularity today is a good example of something becoming a classic or underrated.

I don’t put a lot of stock into RT scores anymore. The majority of my favorite movies have rotten scores lol

I couldn’t agree more on Frozen! I was so, so disappointed when I watched it because the story was mediocre, the characters not so special (I did love Olaf though), and the Oscar-winning song so average?

I wasn’t a fan of Practical Magic though. I loved Sandra and Nicola but the movie just wasn’t for me I guess.

I think I preferred Sven over Olaf only because Olaf was *everywhere* after Frozen came out lol.
