‘My Boss’s Daughter’ (2003) Review

My Boss's Daughter

Tom Stansfield (Ashton Kutcher) works at a publishing company run by the challenging and tyrannical Jack Taylor (Terence Stamp). While trying to keep his head down at work, Tom also harbors a massive crush on Jack’s daughter, Lisa (Tara Reid), who also works at the company. After some miscommunication with Lisa, Tom finds himself house-sitting for Jack. This leads to an entire night of unfortunate events, possibly costing Tom his job and his shot with Lisa.

My Boss’s Daughter is a movie I had always meant to watch but never did… until now! And oof, what I would’ve given to get those 86 minutes of my life back. What a stinker. If you were to sit me down and demand a synopsis of the movie, I’m not sure I could tell you, because I’m still not sure what the point of this movie was.

I know this was an attempt at an old-school screwball comedy with an R-rated bent (which is funny, as the film itself is only PG-13). Unfortunately, nothing in this movie worked for me. I usually find Ashton Kutcher pretty humorous, but his performance in My Boss’s Daughter comes across as lazy and uninspired.

Tara Reid has never been that impressive as an actress, so there’s nothing special about her role as Lisa. It’s no surprise that Kutcher and Reid had zero chemistry here. There’s nothing about them that I liked, apart or together.

There are so many comedic misfires in the movie. Every joke and shenanigan felt forced and ended up unfunny to the point where I found my mind wandering to other things. It’s a shame, too, because director David Zucker had a cast that included Molly Shannon, Jeffrey Tambor, and Kenan Thompson, and they’re not given anything to show off their comedic skills.

I’m unsure what to think because Zucker was also behind the camera for movies like Airplane! and Ruthless People. Maybe the script does make or break a film, because this script is pretty terrible.

I don’t know what else to say about My Boss’s Daughter. I found very little that I enjoyed about it. It’s just a bad movie… definitely, one to skip.
