Ethan and Gary are two men shopping at Tiffany’s. Gary, for a reasonably priced anniversary gift, and Ethan for an engagement ring. They unknowingly swap purchases when Gary gets hit by a taxi, leading Ethan to meet Gary’s girlfriend, Rachel, in the aftermath. Can one mix-up change the trajectory of two people’s lives?

I really wasn’t sure what Something From Tiffany’s was about, as I had heard little about it other than it would star Zoey Deutch. That alone had me on board! She has such an effortless charm about her, and her performance as Rachel in this film is no different. As a character, Rachel is wholly relatable and, most importantly, interesting. She’s not overcome with the “not like other girls!“ quirkiness that often slaps the audience in the face.

Kendrick Sampson plays Ethan, the man who is ready to propose to his girlfriend Vanessa (Shay Mitchell) but finds himself drawn to Rachel. Sampson is a promising leading man, handsome and charismatic. He and Deutch have some fantastic chemistry, which more than makes up for the somewhat convoluted plot. Mitchell and Ray Nicholson, who plays Rachel’s boyfriend, Gary, are fine as The Significant Others. There’s nothing wrong with Vanessa, except that maybe she and Ethan are a little too perfect for one another. Gary definitely has more issues, but he and Rachel’s relationship seems more like they’re comfortable than Meant to Be.

Something from Tiffany’s feels like it’s purposely playing homage to some of the other classic Christmas rom-coms, and I am here for it. It’s awash in rom-com tropes that are executed to satisfaction, and I can appreciate that Something from Tiffany’s seems to know exactly what kind of movie it is, leaning into it with vigor. Somehow that makes it all the more fun.

This is a holiday-themed romantic comedy that I feel will be somewhat underrated but definitely worth a watch around the Christmas season. Deutch is a star and the perfect example of an accessible rom-com heroine, following in the steps of – dare I say it? – Bullock and Ryan. Maybe giving such accolades is too early, but I don’t care!

Something from Tiffany’s was a lovely holiday surprise, and it’s definitely going to be on my rewatch list, especially next Christmas. It’s everything a seasonal rom-com should be and I highly recommend it to fans of the genre.
