    • It was because of the unexpected success of the first film, A Christmas Prince, that Netflix decided to not only film a sequel but also release a slew of similar Christmas-themed romantic comedies.
    • The screenwriters decided to playfully acknowledge the recasting of Amber’s father by way of Princess Emily’s line telling him that “he looks different from how he seemed in Amber’s pictures.” And one of his first lines was even: “I feel like a brand-new person!”
    • When Rudy first meets Mrs. Averill (Sarah Douglas), he shakes her hand and comments about her strong grip. Sarah Douglas played Ursa in Superman II and crushed the hand of Lex Luthor during their first meeting, causing Luthor to comment about her grip.

    ‘A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby’ (2019) Review

    In the third and final movie in The Christmas Prince series, Queen Amber and King Richard prepare for the royal baby’s arrival. They also host the King and Queen of Aldovia’s ally, Penglia, to sign the sacred treaty between the two countries, a practice that has been in place for hundreds of years.

    Amber believes she and Queen Min should also sign the treaty, but the Penglians are very traditional and refuse to allow female monarchs to do so. Apparently, there is also a clause in the treaty that if it’s not signed by midnight on Christmas Eve, the two countries will be back at war with each other… There’s also a curse involving the king’s firstborn if the treaty goes unsigned.

    Of course, the treaty is stolen, so Amber must wear her investigative journalist hat again to find out where it went and who took it. To add to everything, Amber’s friend Melissa arrives early from New York for Christmas, and she and Richard’s cousin Simon reveal to everyone that they’re in love. Amber still doesn’t trust Simon after he attempted to steal the throne from Richard, so she cautions Melissa to be wary of him.

    Like the first two installments in the trilogy, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby is a joy to look at. I love the setting, the snow, and the decorations. But that’s generally where my enjoyment ends. It’s very much in line with the first two movies, and if you loved them, you’d probably love this one too.

    Princess Emily (Honor Kneafsey) is usually a highlight for me, but her role is significantly reduced in The Royal Baby, which is a shame. Amber and Richard have settled into marital bliss and impending parenthood, and they’re as bland and dull as ever. I’m sorry; I know that’s harsh. I appreciate Amber’s progressive thinking, but the two of them as romantic leads provide no real spark or conflict.

    This is a really short review because, honestly, I can’t think of much else to say about A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby or the franchise in general. It’s fluffy enough if that’s what you want, and it’s a good movie to have on in the background as you wrap presents or bake cookies (if that’s your thing, of course). The success of A Christmas Prince meant the subsequent two sequels were churned out quickly to capitalize on its popularity. I feel like The Royal Baby is simply going through the motions, following a tried-and-true formula where quality is not a requirement.

    A year after the events of A Christmas Prince, Amber (Rose McIver) is ready to move across the pond and marry King Richard (Ben Lamb). She brings her father, Rudy (John Guerrasio), and awaits the arrival of her (two?) friends from her former job. Unfortunately, things don’t go as smoothly as Amber had hoped.

    Richard is extremely busy as King, so there is little time for the two to spend together. Her wedding planner, Sahil, wants extravagance, whereas most of Amber’s thoughts and desires for her wedding are ignored. Worst of all, stingy Mrs. Averill is doing her best to censor Amber, believing a Queen’s place is seen and rarely if ever, heard.

    There is also a plot about some new Aldovia initiative plan to help the economy or something, but the money coming in is disappearing. So, workers aren’t being paid, and the heat is on Richard to find out why. Only he’s not interested in finding out where the money is going, no matter how often Amber, a reporter, suggests getting to the bottom of it. Cue Simon’s (Theo Devaney) arrival and an old consultant and friend of the former king, Lord Leopold Plumtree (Simon Dutton).

    The Royal Wedding is less about Amber and Richard’s upcoming nuptials and more about Amber adjusting to royal life and what’s expected of her. She seems very taken aback by the stricter guidelines, which I find odd because she and Richard have been engaged for a year… have they not discussed royal protocol with Amber? They also start planning the wedding the week of… which I found odd.

    I was also not impressed with the recasting of Amber’s father. In the first movie, he’s played by Daniel Fathers. Rudy is pretty chill, owns a diner, and is incredibly supportive of his daughter. In The Royal Wedding, Rudy is portrayed by John Guerrasio, the epitome of a loud New Yorker, accent and everything. At one point, I expected him to yell, “Badda bing!”.

    I was not a fan of the recasting… or if they had to recast, don’t change his character into an obnoxious stereotype. Speaking of stereotypes, is it just a given that in this rom-com, the only two gay men in the entire movie will find something small in common and then gaze adoringly into each other’s eyes, hinting at an instant romance?

    Anyway! There were aspects of A Christmas Prince that I enjoyed well enough, but I found it hard to find those moments in the sequel. A lot is happening, but there is very little romance until the wedding. Once again, Amber saves the day, which makes me think she probably ought to be running the tiny country instead of Richard, who did very little in this movie other than blowing off his fiancée to brood. I just wasn’t that thrilled with this installment of the trilogy. Cousin Simon might have been my favorite part… along with Princess Emily’s insults to him. And for that, I will award this movie 1 star!

    A reporter, desperate for her first big story, is sent to a kingdom called Aldovia over Christmas to try and get a story on Prince Richard (Ben Lamb), who is allegedly ready to abdicate the throne. The press has made Richard out to be an irresponsible playboy, and when he doesn’t show up for a press conference, it only seems to confirm the media’s perception of him.

    Amber (Rose McIver) is aware that she can’t return to the States without a proper story, so she sneaks back into the castle to get some pictures when she’s mistaken for the Princess’s new tutor. Sensing a way to get closer to the royal family for her story, Amber lies and confirms that she is, in fact, the tutor. This gives Amber an inside track on Prince Richard, and she soon discovers family secrets that may jeopardize Richard’s place on the throne.

    A Christmas Prince is more or less exactly what I expected it to be. Along the same vein as The Holiday Calendar, it’s mindless, festive fluff. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. This movie was a bit middle-of-the-road for me in terms of a rom-com.

    There are a lot of question marks and things that don’t make much sense – are those in charge of royal security going to take a young woman at her word that she’s a tutor and not even ask to see some form of ID? – but A Christmas Prince is not a movie that will delve too deeply into the plot. If you’re watching this movie, you’re watching it for romance and fantasy.

    Ben Lamb and Rose McIver were cute enough on-screen together, but their characters weren’t terribly interesting to me. Lamb’s Prince is seen as the “black sheep” of the royal family, which could have made for a relatively unique leading man, but sadly, the gossip and rumors about his deviant behavior are pretty much false.

    Prince Richard is… well, a Prince, even if he’s slightly guarded from his friends and family. He has his reasons. Amber lies about her profession to write a news story, but that’s the extent of her flaws. She’s pretty, kind-hearted, understanding, and has a knack for winning over (almost) everyone, including Prince Richard’s younger, mischievous, and difficult sister, Princess Emily. Together, Prince Richard and Amber are perfectly compatible and a little boring.

    I have to give A Christmas Prince some credit, though. The story has some legitimate conflict, stemming from Amber’s deception and Prince Richard’s ex-girlfriend, his cousin, and a family secret Amber uncovers. Considering this is a rom-com, a holiday rom-com, no less, there’s no doubt how the romance will end, but the rest felt a bit up in the air, which I appreciated. It was also lovely to look at, with its sprawling castle, snow, and holiday decorations. Not to mention the Christmas Eve Ball… swoon.

    I can’t say A Christmas Prince is a good movie; it really isn’t. But it wasn’t overly terrible, either. I think it was exactly what I was expecting, coming from Netflix. There are two sequels to this movie, which I will also be watching, simply because I really feel like I need to finish rom-com trilogies once I start them. We’ll see if things improve or get more ridiculous.
