The Princess Switch: Switched Again Synopsis: When Duchess Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne to Montenaro and hits a rough patch with Kevin, it’s up to her double Stacy to save the day before a new lookalike, party girl Fiona foils their plans.

Doppelgangers Stacy and Margaret are back The Princess Switch: Switched Again, a sequel to The Princess Switch (2018). Margaret and Kevin have broken up due to Margaret’s impending coronation as Queen of Montenaro, and Stacy is determined to get them back together somehow. Her marriage to Prince Edward is hitting its rough patch as Stacy is so focused on Margaret and Kevin and her own royal duties that she’s been… neglectful. Throw in Margaret’s shallow, up-to-no-good cousin, Fiona (who also looks just like Stacy and Margaret), and you’ve got a potential Montenaro disaster on your hands!

Anyway, The Princess Switch was all right, but nothing about it set it aside from the other plethora of Netflix holiday rom-coms. It was a fluffy way to spend about ninety minutes of your time, especially during the holidays. With so many other movies I wanted to watch, I put off the sequel until this year. I’m glad I did. While the first movie had some semblance of charm, Switched Again is lacking even that.

Stacy and Edward take a back seat until Stacy decides to switch places with Margaret so Margaret can spend some quality time with Kevin. Her rocky marriage is a minor subplot and reminiscent of A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. Cousin Fiona is a blonde, sneering socialite who is nearly broke and has her two one-dimensional goons pickpocket people at fancy parties. Two unrelated people who look identical were pushing it… now there are three identical Vanessa Hudgens, and it’s all kinds of silly.

One thing Switched Again has in common with its predecessor is the terrible accents. Notably, Hudgens’s accent. But you know what? She clearly seems to be having fun making these movies, so I can’t fault her too much. The issue for me is Prince Edward is still as bland as ever… he and Prince Richard from the A Christmas Prince series could be bland brothers. Kevin isn’t really that much more interesting, and he and Margaret severely lack chemistry. I didn’t care about whether or not they ended up together.

The Princess Switch: Switched Again is about decking the halls and showering its audience with beautiful settings and Christmas cheer. The plot, if you can call it that, is an afterthought. However, I think most people who watch these movies are well aware that they’re not going to be anything mind-blowing. They’re cheesy, inoffensive, and ready to vomit Yuletide all over you. If you go into Switched Again with that knowledge, you may actually like it.
