Thursday Movie Picks: Amateur Sleuths

Wandering through the Shelves hosts a weekly movie challenge in which you choose 3-5 movies based on that Thursday’s theme and explain why you chose those movies.

Today’s theme is Amateur Sleuths so here are my choices!

Lisbeth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

I think David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is such an underrated movie. I read the book(s) and saw this in the theater and was blown away by the storytelling and Rooney Mara’s fantastic portrayal of hacker Lisbeth Salander. She and disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) come together to help solve a 40-year-old murder. There are no spoilers here, but Lisbeth Salander is a badass, and I am forever heartbroken that Fincher, Mara, and Craig didn’t film the sequels.

Charley (Fright Night)

Okay, so this may be pushing the amateur-sleuth theme, but when Charley (Anton Yelchin, RIP) begins to suspect his neighbor, Jerry (a delicious Colin Farrell), is a vampire, he tries to uncover the truth before his girlfriend and mother become victims of the undead. I know this is a super hot take, and perhaps blasphemy, in horror-lover circles, but I enjoyed this remake so much more than the original. I thought Yelchin was wonderful as Charley, and Colin Farrell was so…. predatory and sexy as Jerry, and yes, I understand how messed up that sounds!

Stephanie (A Simple Favor)

A Simple Favor was a really pleasant surprise for me. I hadn’t read the book, so I went in not really knowing what the movie was about. Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a single mother/vlogger who is befriended by Emily (Blake Lively), the mother of one of Stephanie’s son’s classmates. Emily is gorgeous and sophisticated, everything Stephanie admires. But Emily is also a mystery, and when she goes missing, Stephanie puts on her detective cap to try and figure out what happened to her new best friend. There are a lot of twists and turns in this film, and Kenrick and Lively have some fantastic chemistry. It doesn’t hurt that Henry Golding plays Emily’s husband (yummy).
