Falling for Christmas Synopsis: In the days leading up to Christmas, a young and newly engaged heiress experiences a skiing accident. After being diagnosed with amnesia, she finds herself in the care of the handsome lodge owner and his daughter.
When Sierra, a newly engaged heiress, has a skiing accident, she suffers from amnesia. She finds herself being taken in by Jake, a widower and ski lodge owner, and his young daughter Bianca. While trying to care for Sierra, Jake is dealing with his own problems, notably the financial burden of owning a lodge that isn’t doing much business. After some mishaps, Sierra and Jake rediscover the meaning of Christmas together.
Falling for Christmas, Lindsay Lohan’s first film in three years, is not as schmoopy as some of Netflix’s Christmas offerings. It’s also not very good. While I am used to rom-coms, especially holiday rom-coms, being predictable, Falling for Christmas doesn’t attempt any originality. The script is ridiculously simple, and by the book and the acting, it is… well, some of it is fine. Some of it is pretty over-the-top bad.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Lindsay Lohan except for Mean Girls, but it was nice to see her on-screen again. She does what she can with the script, which isn’t much. I think her presence alone catapults this film over other Netflix’s Christmas films. The rest of the cast pales in comparison to Lohan, though that’s honestly not saying much.
My biggest issue with Falling for Christmas is the lack of chemistry between Lindsay Lohan and Chord Overstreet. They’re both fine on their own, but when they’re together, their attraction seems forced. For most of the movie, the blossoming relationship felt more platonic than anything else until the ending, when they were suddenly in love. I just didn’t buy it.
The upside to Falling for Christmas is that it’s beautiful to look at. It screams Christmas with the snow, lights, and festive Christmas wardrobes. There was also minimal eye-rolling on my end. The more cringe scenes tended to be when Sierra’s fiance, Tad, was on screen. It’s not great, but if you really want a silly Christmas romance to watch on a lazy weekend, Falling for Christmas will fill that void… but only if you’ve gone through all the better holiday films out there.
