📸 When We First Met (2018): After spending a night with the girl of his dreams only to become just friends, a man gets the opportunity to travel through time and alter that night over and over again until he gets everything perfect and makes her his.

Review Excerpt: Daddario’s Avery and Robbie Amell’s Ethan are woefully underdeveloped as characters. Not that they’re terribly essential to the plot, as the movie really shines when it’s focused solely on Noah and Carrie (Hennig), but it would have been nice to see just why Noah was so enthralled with Avery beyond that one night at Halloween. Despite some silly moments (and a horrible ‘fat suit’ which looks more like a pillow shoved under Noah’s shirt), I really enjoyed this one and was a big fan of the ending (which, admittedly I saw coming in the first 20 minutes but that didn’t ruin it for me).

✈️ Flight Risk (2025): A pilot transports an Air Marshal accompanying a fugitive to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.

I had no idea that Flight Risk was directed by Mel Gibson until the end credits. They really buried that bit of info, didn’t they? Or maybe I just didn’t pay enough attention, too distracted by Mark Wahlberg’s terrible hair. Or lack thereof.

Flight Risk isn’t terrible. It has some entertaining moments, mostly when Wahlberg is getting his a** beat. And I enjoyed the blossoming, platonic relationship between Madelyn (Michelle Dockery) and Winston (Topher Grace). Topher is one of the only cast members left of That 70’s Show I have any remaining respect for and he’s able to take some stale dialogue and make it work.

But as a whole, Flight Risk is a predictable thriller with a mediocre script. The actors did what they could with the material and it seems like Mark Wahlberg just went balls to the wall with his performance. He’s much more menacing when he’s literally attacking people than when he’s just throwing out obscene threats while cuffed to the plane.

Somehow the simple premise fills 90 minutes and to be honest, if you turn your brain off and don’t expect much, Flight Risk is a fun enough movie - for January anyway. If nothing else you can groan at the CGI moose at the beginning.

Meanwhile, her sister, Beth, is experiencing her own set of relationship woes as she plans her wedding.

Review Excerpt: I could feel the film’s effort to be quirky and different but there is nothing overly memorable about Save The Date. If anything, it suffers from a lack of likable characters and originality. Lizzy Caplan fails as the manic pixie dream girl and instead just comes across as a selfish commitment-phobe. By the end of the movie, I was pretty convinced that both of her beaus in this movie deserved better.

So, I’ve decided maintaining two movie accounts was too much for me, mostly because I kept forgetting I even had another one. Ha. So anyway, I decided to post new movie reviews on this account, along with my rom-com reviews. On my website, I just call them Random Reviews, so that’s what I’m going with here. I don’t know how often I’ll post them, but we’ll see. It’s always best not to corner myself into something, because my ADHD will just shut it all down! Anyway, here we go.

🐺 Wolf Man (2025): Blake and his family are attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside a farmhouse as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable that soon jeopardizes his wife and daughter.

Wolf Man is a solid effort from director Leigh Whannell. There are some genuine scares, not to mention a few gruesome body horror moments that had me averting my eyes. Julia Garner, Christopher Abbott, and Matilda Firth deliver strong performances that help carry an otherwise predictable, middling script. I would have enjoyed it more had it focused more on building the characters and their relationships with each other before throwing them into the terror of being stalked by an unknown, persistent animal while Blake is dealing with his own transformation.

The symbolism of generational trauma is so blatant here that there’s very little room for nuance. Julia Garner’s Charlotte even spells it out for us. “Your grandpa was sick and I think he gave it to your dad.” Just punch us in the face with it, right? But, the sound editing is top-notch, the score is hauntingly beautiful, and Whannell does an excellent job ratcheting up the tension, even if the ending falls a bit flat.

I liked Wolf Man quite a bit, but I walked away feeling as though it could have been so much better.

Starter for 10 (2006): In 1985, against the backdrop of Thatcherism, Brian Jackson enrolls in the University of Bristol, a scholarship boy from seaside Essex with a love of knowledge for its own sake and a childhood spent watching University Challenge, a college quiz show. At Bristol he tries out for the Challenge team and falls under the spell of Alice, a lovely blond with an extensive sexual past.

Review Excerpt: Starter for 10 is, at its heart, a romantic comedy. It follows the genre’s proper beats but does so with sharp wit and a lot of 80s nostalgia. Not to mention a killer soundtrack. It also showcases James McAvoy’s ability as a charming leading man. He carries the film as Brian, a young man striving for knowledge while getting caught up in the drama and angst that can accompany one’s first year at university. One could say Starter for 10 is coming-of-age fare, and I wouldn’t argue that. But these problems feel more significant than, say, a bunch of high schoolers attempting to lose their virginity before prom.
