Killers Synopsis: A vacationing woman meets her ideal man, leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple.

While on vacation in France with her parents, Jen (Katherine Heigl) meets Spencer (Ashton Kutcher), a handsome, seemingly average guy who finds Jen’s awkwardness charming. As it turns out, Spencer is a professional assassin in France on a job.

But after falling for Jen, he leaves his career as a professional hitman behind. He and Jen get married, and Spencer starts his life as a normal, Suburban husband. At least until he finds out someone has put a $20 million bounty on his head, and friends and neighbors are suddenly out for blood.

This was a rewatch for me. I couldn’t remember much about Killers before I sat down to watch it again, and I doubt I’ll remember much about it in the coming weeks. It’s a pretty typical action rom-com in the vein of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but nowhere near as clever or sexy. It’s not a complete failure, though.

I thought Kutcher and Heigl actually had some pretty decent chemistry, and while Kutcher has never been a favorite of mine, acting-wise, I have to admit that he looks really good in this movie – I know I’m objectifying him here, but daaang. Some genuine laughs are scattered here and there, but not enough to save a pretty mediocre script.

I would say the movie’s highlight is Jen’s parents, played by Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara, but sadly, they don’t get as much screen time as I would have liked. O’Hara, especially, is completely wasted as Jen’s boozy mom.

Killers is a pretty bland action rom-com. I saw the twist coming, but it also seems the movie’s entirety is conveniently ignored to have a neat, happy ending. I mean, there were a lot of deaths! Some pretty gruesome ones, too.

But maybe I’m just nitpicking now. I can’t find anything in this movie to tell you it’s worth a watch unless you want to ogle Kutcher for an hour and a half. Heigl has plenty of rom-coms to choose from, one or two of which are infinitely better than Killers. I’m giving this two stars for two reasons: Ashton’s abs and Catherine O’Hara.
