Thursday Movie Picks: Non-English Language Movies: Wandering through the Shelves hosts a weekly movie challenge in which you choose 3-5 movies based on that Thursday’s theme and explain why you chose those movies. Today’s theme is Non-English Language movies, so here are my choices!
let the right one in (sweden – 2018)
I reviewed Let the Right One In last October for Screenage Wasteland. It’s a wonderful coming-of-age story about a bullied young boy who falls in love with his neighbor, a young girl who also happens to be a vampire. The two leads are fantastic, and the ending is just… wow. No spoilers! But this movie is the perfect combination of horror and romance and one that I highly recommend!
your name (japan – 2016)
I have yet to see Your Name, but I have heard wonderful things about it, and it’s been recommended to me many, many times! Two teenagers, who are strangers, discover they are swapping bodies and suddenly share a magical connection. Things become more complicated when they decide to meet. This movie got some great reviews, and I can’t wait to see it finally.
delicacy (france – 2011)
Can you believe it? A romance featuring Audrey Tautou that isn’t Amélie! La Délicatesse (Delicacy) is about a woman who begins to date again after being widowed. I have yet to watch this movie, but I do have it on my watchlist, so hopefully, I will watch it soon! I think Tautou is adorable, so I’ll likely watch anything she’s in if I can.

July 15, 2021I’m afraid I haven’t seen any of these though I have heard of the first and last.
So many people have praised Let the Right One In but from all the synopses I’ve read it doesn’t sound like it’s for me.
Like you I have the Audrey Tautou on my watchlist but haven’t gotten there yet.
The Japanese film if I’m not wrong is anime so I’ll never watch it.
I also chose a film each from France and Japan plus on from Italy. All are ones I’ve seen relatively recently.
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970)-An Italian police inspector (Gian Maria Volonte) held in high regard within the department and community murders his mistress and then insinuates himself into the homicide investigation that follows. Believing he is above suspicion he takes it as a game to plant clues at the crime scene to test the competence and integrity of Italian law enforcement. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
A Colt is My Passport (1967)-Hitman Shuji Kamimura (Joe Shishido) and his partner Shun Shiozaki (Jerry Fujio) are hired by yakuza boss Senzaki to kill a rival whose greed has become a problem. The job comes off but then the pair runs into complications that seem to be headed in a deadly direction. This pastiche of noir/yakuza/spaghetti Western takes you on a wild ride.
Orpheus (1950)-During an altercation in a Parisian Cafe involving the poet Orphée (Jean Marais) rival poet Cègeste (Edouard Dermithe) is killed. A mysterious princess (María Casares) appears and insists on taking Orpheus and the body away in her Rolls-Royce. Orphée soon finds himself in the underworld, where the Princess announces that she is, in fact, Death. Orpheus escapes in the Rolls back to the land of the living but at a cost. Jean Cocteau directed this surrealistic updating of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

July 15, 2021I’m not a huge fan of anime myself but I still watch to give it a watch. It looks beautiful.
I’ve not heard of your films but they sound really interesting, especially Orpheus. I have always enjoyed Greek mythology.

July 15, 2021Let The Right One In is one of my all time favorite movies. Your Name is really good, I hope you get to watch it soon. I haven’t seen Delicacy. I really like Tatou as well.

July 15, 2021I was so pleasantly surprised by LTROI. I’m afraid to watch the remake, though I’ve heard it’s pretty good too.

July 18, 2021I have only seen Your Name out of your picks, but I definitely heard of all of them. Especially Let The Right One In is one I’ve come across a lot and I have no idea why I haven’t seen it yet. 😅

July 18, 2021It has some pretty gruesome moments but it’s worth a watch!

July 22, 2021I really like Let The Right One In that is about love but also a bit of sadness because of the young girl’s helper and who he represents. I have not seen the other 2 but would like to see the 3rd one.
