Unforgettable On-Screen Chemistry: Romantic comedies have a special place in our hearts and part of their charm lies in the incredible chemistry between on-screen couples. These couples have left an indelible mark on cinematic history, from classic Hollywood duos to more recent favorites. These are 10 of my favorite on-screen couples with unmatched chemistry!

AUDREY HEPBURN & GREGORY PECK – ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953)
In 1953, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck kept audiences enthralled with their remarkable chemistry as Princess Ann and reporter Joe Bradley. Their romance may be doomed, but their enchanting day through Rome and blossoming love for one another created one of history’s most charming, bittersweet romantic comedies. Peck and Hepburn’s on-screen connection translated to a life-long friendship off-screen as well.
Princess Ann: I don’t know how to say goodbye. I can’t think of any words.
Joe Bradley: Don’t try.

JULIA ROBERTS & HUGH GRANT – NOTTING HILL (1999)
Was there any doubt that Julia Roberts’ megawatt smile, paired with Grant’s bumbling charm, would create a match made in rom-com heaven? Their magnetic pairing made audiences worldwide believe that even a travel bookshop owner in Notting Hill could win the heart of the world’s biggest movie star. The movie’s success and their on-screen chemistry only cemented their status as icons in the rom-com genre.
William Thacker: I live in Notting Hill. You live in Beverly Hills. Everyone in the world knows who you are, my mother has trouble remembering my name.
Anna Scott: I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.

KATHARINE HEPBURN & SPENCER TRACY – ADAM’S RIB (1949)
The legendary on-screen (and off-screen) partnership of Hepburn and Tracy is epitomized in Adam’s Rib. Amanda and Adam Bonner, are married lawyers on opposing sides of an attempted murder case that fuels a battle of the sexes. Spencer and Katharine’s witty repartee and on-screen synergy established them as one of the greatest rom-com couples of Hollywood’s golden era.
Amanda Bonner: Now, look, all I’m trying to say is that there are lots of things that a man can do and in society’s eyes, it’s all hunky-dory. A woman does the same thing–the same, mind you–and she’s an outcast.
Adam Bonner: Finished?
Amanda Bonner: No. Now I’m not blaming you personally, Adam, because this is so.
Adam Bonner: Oh, well, that’s awfully large of you.

DREW BARRYMORE & ADAM SANDLER – THE WEDDING SINGER (1998)
The Wedding Singer was the first romantic comedy to showcase Drew and Adam’s delightful chemistry. They charmed movie audiences as Julia and Robbie, co-workers who become friends and fall in love, all while planning Julia’s wedding to someone else. Drew and Adam were so amazing on-screen together that they collaborated twice more with 50 First Dates and Blended. But it’s The Wedding Singer that made them a beloved rom-com pairing.
Julia: I vomited in my hair.
Robbie: All right.
Julia: Does my hair smell bad?
Robbie: No, it smells good, actually.

EMMA STONE & RYAN GOSLING (2011) – CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011)
Crazy, Stupid, Love was Emma and Ryan’s first movie together, and their insanely charming on-screen chemistry led to them co-starring in two more films (so far), Gangster Squad (2013) and the Oscar-winning La La Land (2016). As Jacob and Hannah in Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gosling and Stone are very reminiscent of earlier iconic rom-com pairings – Ryan and Hanks, Hepburn and Tracy! Their natural rapport is perfect for the genre.
Jacob: Can I sit down, please?
Hannah: Yeah.
Jacob: Can I put back on my shirt?
Hannah: No.

ZOEY DEUTCH & GLEN POWELL – SET IT UP (2018)
Set It Up remains a sorely underrated romantic comedy. Glen Powell’s charming and witty portrayal of Charlie Young perfectly complemented Zoey Deutch’s endearing and charismatic Harper Moore, creating a delightful dynamic between the two. Their on-screen connection is infectious throughout the film, but it’s downright palpable in a scene where the two share a pizza. That scene alone puts their sizzling chemistry on full display. Set It Up is a great rom-com, but the pairing of Powell and Deutch undoubtedly helped its success.
Harper: Why are you dressed like that?
Charlie: I don’t work here anymore. I quit working for Rick. Starting over. At 28. Actually, I’m a temp, which is technically lower on the totem pole than an assistant, which is kind of a kick in the nuts. But it’s, um, kind of cool. I get to see a bunch of different jobs. Find out what I actually like. I like you. So, so much. You’re not hard to get at all. You’re hard to earn. It’s so much better.

CHARLIZE THERON & SETH ROGEN – LONG SHOT (2019)
Unlikely but not impossible. Long Shot was overlooked by many when it was released in 2019, which is a real shame. Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen delivered a sizzling on-screen chemistry that added a unique and memorable twist to the genre. Theron, known for her elegance and sophistication, plays the role of Charlotte Field, a successful and ambitious politician. Conversely, Rogen brought his trademark humor and charm as Fred Flarsky, a free-spirited journalist. The unexpected pairing of Theron and Rogen created a delightful contrast that fueled the film’s humor and romance.
Charlotte Field: He’s my Mister.
Fred Flarsky: I’m her Mister. And she’s my president.

SANAA LATHAN & TAYE DIGGS – BROWN SUGAR (2002)
Portraying childhood friends Sidney Shaw and Dre Ellis in 2002’s Brown Sugar, Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs brought authenticity and charm to their roles. The romantic comedy certainly benefited from Lathan and Diggs’ natural rapport and magnetic chemistry. They are incredible on-screen together, especially when they’re trying desperately to ignore their attraction for each other as they build relationships with other people. The two exude romantic tension in Brown Sugar. Diggs and Lathan also in The Best Man movie series as love interests.
Sidney: Oh, I forgot being best friends with a man means I get to find out the stupid and simple ways they look at women.
Dre: Well, that’s how men are, stupid and simple.

ANDY SAMBERG & CRISTIN MILIOTI – PALM SPRINGS (2020)
Hulu’s Palm Springs is a refreshing take on the romantic comedy. As Nyles, Andy Samberg’s charming and laid-back demeanor perfectly complements Milioti’s witty and sharp character of Sarah. The duo’s seamless banter and genuine connection create a captivating on-screen presence, making their journey through the time-loop narrative entertaining and emotionally resonant. Their remarkable chemistry is the kind to keep you engaged and hoping for a happy ending. I would love to see these two on screen together again.
Sarah: What if we get sick of each other?
Nyles: We’re already sick of each other. It’s the best.
